A Guardian Within
Desert Rose the “Barite” is also known as “Gypsum Rose or Rosettes”, “Sand Rose” or “Selenite Desert Rose”. The name Gypsum comes from the Greek word “gypsos”, meaning “plaster”. Desert Rose is a fairly common crystal found in desert areas like Algeria, Australia, Mexico, Morocco, Namibia, South Africa and Spain.
It is a Calcium Sulphate Dihydrate, or form of gypsum which sand particles become embedded in, of the sulphates class of crystals. Its appearance is bladed either in the shape of a rose, ball or almost a solid and rounded figure eight in shades of cream, light brown, tan or white and is opaque.
Desert Rose has the same properties as Selenite such as clarity, prosperity and purification as well as its own. It can be used to channel white healing light and remove negative energy from a person or place, sending it back to Mother Earth to be healed.
Each piece is said to contain a spirit guardian within it; hence, the reason why no two pieces are the same. They can be used as a protective talisman and can help those who are timid or shy, but have latent talents, to increase creativity as well as psychic abilities. It can help the user to deal with grief and to let go of emotions or belief systems that are preventing them from living the life they should be living.
It is a good crystal for helping with phobias too and in particular claustrophobia. Desert Rose is particularly useful for anyone who readily accepts criticism and whose response to it is to feel nauseous, especially when under stress.
Desert Rose is associated with the Goddess Selene, the Greek Moon Goddess, who travels the sky to guide and protect those in the dark. She is pictured wearing a crown of the crescent moon, long robes and carrying a torch to light the way.
Desert Rose can be used to connect with Archangels Auriel, Gabriel, Metatron, Sandalphon, Seraphiel, Tzaphkiel, and Uriel.
Myths say that the Desert Rose was carved by a Native American Warrior who had returned from the spirit world.
Desert Rose is primarily associated with the Base (Root) Chakra (Muladhara), relating to survival and security. Its secondary Chakra is the Crown Chakra (Sahasrara), relating to spiritual connection, understanding and enlightenment.
In crystal healing, Desert Rose is said to help with illnesses and symptoms relating to: bone strengthening, chronic fatigue, epilepsy, nausea, muscular/skeletal conditions, osteoporosis, pain relief, PMS, prostate health, psoriasis, spine health and ulcers, travel sickness and viral infections.
Emotionally, Desert Rose is said to assist with addictions, feelings or chaos, forgiveness, harmony, honesty, positive energy, reducing stress or tension, self-confidence and self-worth. Spiritually it is reported to assist with Angel communication, aura cleansing and clearing, Christ consciousness, communication with the higher self, dispelling negativity, enhancing and stimulating dreams, enhancing psychic abilities, enhances intuition, meditation, past-life recall and raising vibrations.
Desert Rose is not a traditional or ancient birthstone but is a modern birthstone for the Zodiac signs of Capricorn, 22nd December to 19th January, Taurus, 20th April to 20th May, and Scorpio, 23rd October to 21st November.

Important to Know
WARNING: Desert Rose is a soft mineral and should be kept dry and stored carefully to prevent it from breaking.
As with all crystals you use regularly, don’t forget to cleanse and recharge it at least once a month.
For crystal healers who use crystals in their work, they should be cleansed after each client to remove any negative energy prior to being used on someone else.
PLEASE REMEMBER: Although the powers of crystals and stones are well documented and have been proven to help bring positivity into people's lives, they are never a substitute for medical advice.
