The Viking Compass
Iolite, the “Water Sapphire”, “Viking's Compass" and “Stone of Muses”, is also known as “Dichroite” probably because of its pleochroism or dichroism properties, whereby it looks to be a different colour when the stone is looked at through different positions. Iolite is the gem variety of the mineral “Cordierite” which was named after Louis Cordier, a French geologist who first discovered it in 1813. The name Iolite comes from the Greek word violeta meaning violet and has only been in use since 1912.
Iolite is a commonly found crystal from Brazil, India, Madagascar, Myanmar (Burma) and Sri Lanka (Ceylon). It is a Magnesium Iron Aluminium Silicate of the silicates class of crystals. It comes in various shades of violet-blue or indigo (dark blue) but in different positions may appear to change to a clear light blue, a honey or a yellow-grey colour and is partially translucent in appearance.
Iolite is the crystal to use if you wish to release discord in relationships and to understand why you find the same patterns repeating themselves in your life, particularly if you regularly find yourself in unhealthy relationships. It will help you to not depend on others for validation of who you are and thus take responsibility for yourself and to find the right direction in which to move forward mentally, physically or spiritually with your life.
Iolite can bring focus, motivation and organisation, particularly for the chronically disorganised. It is also reported to be of great help in finding ways to responsibly manage finances in order to recover from debt. It is known as the “Stone of Muses” for its ability to unlock visions and creativity in whatever medium you choose such as writing, dance or drawing.
Viking explorers looked through thin slices of Iolite on cloudy or hazy days to locate the exact position of the sun for navigational purposes. In this way, it acted very much like a Polaroid lens, making everything clear. This enabled them to navigate safely to where they were headed and back home again. Hence the name “Vikings Compass.” This is also probably why it was thought by many to be an amulet to wear to bring travellers safely home.
Iolite is associated with the Goddess Athena, the Greek Goddess of War and Wisdom. Crystals of a violet or indigo colour are also associated with Sophia, the Greek Goddess of Wisdom and Contradiction personified.
Healing Emotional Abouse
Iolite is not associated with any particular Angel but is reputed to be associated with the Octopus (adaptability, flexibility, emotional wellbeing, creativity, psychic abilities, focus, logic, intelligence, potential) and Peacock Spirit Animals.
Iolite is primarily associated with the Third Eye or Brow Chakra (Ajna), relating to insight, intuition, awareness and guidance. Its secondary chakra is the Crown Chakra (Sahasrara), relating to spiritual connection, understanding and enlightenment.
In crystal healing, Iolite is said to help with symptoms relating to the following illnesses and areas of the body: addictions and their cause, alcoholism, chronic fatigue, cramps, detoxification, disorientation and dizziness, eye strain, fatigue, headaches, improving memory, limb numbness, liver disorders, malaria and other fever-producing disorders, Meniere's disease, migraines, musculoskeletal problems, pain toleration, reduction of fatty deposits in the body, regulating digestion, sleep and thyroid balance. It is said to relieve insomnia and nightmares when placed under the pillow.
Emotionally, Iolite is said to assist with calming, coping with change, discernment, emotional abuse, hope, inner strength, positivity, self-confidence and stress. It is reputed to assist in loving and accepting ourselves and thus helping to overcome co-dependency with a partner.
Spiritually, Iolite is said to aid astral travel, aura revitalising, energy balancing, intuition and psychic abilities, meditation, Reiki healing, spiritual growth and visualisation. It is known to be a vision stone and is therefore perfect to use for shamanic journeying or to link with past lives to see whether they affect the present life, particularly any associated with the Cathars, the Knights Templar and/or the Arthurian legends. Some Shamans wear an Iolite ring to ensure accuracy in their visions when working on behalf of others.
Iolite is not a traditional or ancient birthstone but is a modern birthstone for the Zodiac signs of Taurus (20th April - 20th May) and Sagittarius (22nd November - 21st December). Also, Iolite is used to commemorate the 21st wedding anniversary.
Meditation
Iolite is a perfect crystal for meditating with to still an overactive mind in order to better communicate with your higher self for guidance or to communicate with Ascended Masters, spirit guides and other realms. It is also a vision stone and can be used in shamanic ceremonies to aid visualisation and insight and may be used for out of body experiences and astral travelling.
Affirmation: I am my own true self.
Important to Know
WARNING: As with all crystals you use regularly, don’t forget to cleanse and recharge it at least once a month.
For crystal healers who use crystals in their work, they should be cleansed after each client to remove any negative energy prior to being used on someone else.
PLEASE REMEMBER: Although the powers of crystals and stones are well documented and have been proven to help bring positivity into people's lives, they are never a substitute for medical advice.
