Location & Composition of the Crystal

Emerald also known as the “Stone of Successful Love” and the “Travellers Protection Stone”. It is named from the Greek prásini pétra, meaning green stone. The finest Emeralds are found in South America and Colombia, where they have been mined for over 400 years, although they can also be found in Australia, Brazil, Canada, Egypt, India and Zimbabwe.

Emerald is a beryllium-aluminium silicate, a variety of Beryl, the colour of which is due to small quantities of chromium and vanadium. It is one of a group of precious gemstones such as Diamond and Ruby. Synthetic Emeralds are manufactured in France, Germany and the United States and the Oriental Emerald is not actually an Emerald but a transparent green variety of Corundum.

General Information & Legends

Emerald is a crystal that enhances unconditional love, unity and promotes friendship. It keeps partnerships in balance and is said to signal unfaithfulness if it changes colour. It is one of a number of crystals that can be used to attract prosperity and reminds us that the Universe will always provide.

Emeralds were also used by Native Americans to connect with guides for vision quests, a rite of passage ceremony for the young in order for them to have a vision that would help them find their purpose in life and their role in the community which was led by Elders. Traditionally, it was used to protect against enchantments, as well as ploys from those practising the dark arts. It is reported that Aristotle and Alexander the Great wore them as talismans.

Connections: Goddesses & Angels

Ancient mythology informs us that Emerald is the sacred crystal of the Goddess Venus and is said to preserve love, as well as being a symbol of hope. It is also associated with Mercury, the messenger of the gods and of travel. This is why it is commonly referred to as the “Travellers Protection Stone.”

It is said that it was sold in the markets of Babylon as early as 4,000 BCE, that it was worshipped by the Incas and also in Ancient Egypt where it was classed as a symbol of eternal life, a gift of Thoth, the God of Wisdom, and was a favourite jewel of Cleopatra. In fact, the ancient Emerald mines in Egypt that were rediscovered a century ago were named Cleopatra’s mines because of that.

Chakras

Emerald is primarily associated with the Heart Chakra (Anahata) which is associated with love and compassion; it has a healing effect on the emotions as well as the physical heart.

Healing: Physical, Emotional & Spiritual

Physically, Emerald is said to help with symptoms relating to arthritis, blood pressure, cancer, colds, diabetes, emphysema, eyes, fever, heart, immune system, liver, lungs, memory, muscular system, nausea, rheumatism, sinuses, spine, toxins, ulcers, vomiting and weakness. It has a detoxifying effect on the liver, helps with recovery from infectious diseases and provides support during chronic conditions.

Emotionally, Emerald is said to assist with calmness, clarity, clear vision, communication, compassion, faith, grief, guilt, honesty, inspiration, intelligence, intuition, joy, love, romance, serenity, tranquillity and truth. It is considered to be a crystal of regeneration and recovery and will help heal negative emotions; particularly with regard to relationships of all kinds.

Spiritually, Emerald can help to manifest abundance and deal with karma. It also helps the user to open up psychic abilities and enhance the ability to recognise and manage synchronicities.

Important to Know

WARNING: Emerald is not a particularly hard crystal and can easily be chipped or broken if knocked or dropped onto a hard surface. If you have jewellery containing an Emerald, be sure to take care not to spoil it with perfume, body lotions or other chemicals and to protect them from knocks when stored with other jewellery.

As with all crystals you use regularly, don’t forget to cleanse and recharge it at least once a month.

For crystal healers who use crystals in their work, they should be cleansed after each client to remove any negative energy prior to being used on someone else.

PLEASE REMEMBER: Although the powers of crystals and stones are well documented and have been proven to help bring positivity into people's lives, they are never a substitute for medical advice.
