Integrity & Willpower

Sardonyx the “Gamblers Stone “is also known as “Sardian Onyx”. The name Sardonyx comes from it being a composite of Sard and Onyx; the Greek word “sard” meaning “reddish-brown,” and “onyx” meaning “veined gem”. Sardonyx is a common crystal found in America, Brazil, China, Czech Republic, Germany, India, Madagascar, Russia and Uruguay; although the best-banded specimens come from India.

It is a Silicon Dioxide of the silicates class of crystals and is an opaque crystal which comes in various shades of black, brown, grey, red and white and often has a banded pattern to it and can be quite brittle. As with all combination crystals, it has its own metaphysical properties but also carries the benefits of the component parts to a degree.

Sardonyx is a crystal of protection and encourages good behaviour, integrity, motivation and willpower as well as boosting creativity; so a really fabulous crystal for artists, writers or anyone else whose work relies on creativity to use. The properties also work well for anyone studying or for any activity that requires tremendous focus.

It will help you to progress along your life path whilst attracting spiritual growth and is said to aid psychic contact with those who have died. It has always been considered to be a lucky crystal bringing happiness and good fortune, particularly to romantic relationships.

Sardonyx has long been used in rituals and can be traced back four thousand years to ancient Egypt where it was used to protect against evil spirits and entities. It was also used to grid the home by placing a crystal in each of the corners of the home where the energies could build and form a protective barrier around the entire property.

These crystals can be used in this way today and a pendulum can be used to dowse for the correct positions to place them, rather than put one in every corner of the home. It is believed that the presence of Sardonyx helps to create a decrease in crime in the neighbourhood.

In ancient Rome, it was worn on the breastplates of High Priests and soldiers usually as a cameo or intaglio (the reverse form of a cameo), depicting Mars or Hercules, as it was believed that the wearer would be endowed with the courage and strength of these Gods. Roman women wore cameos of Venus, the Goddess of Love.

Sardonyx is not associated with any particular Goddess but Onyx honours Cybele, the Anatolian Earth Mother Goddess and Goddess of Spring Break, and Themis, the Greek Goddess of Justice.

Sardonyx is not associated with any particular Archangel.

Confidence & Stability

Sardonyx is primarily associated with the Base or Root Chakra (Muladhara), relating to survival and security. It has a very protective vibration and will create a strong grounding action through the Root and the Earth Star Chakra. The crystals which have white coloured inclusions are known to resonate within the Third Eye (Ajna), relating to insight, intuition, awareness and guidance, and the Crown Chakra (Sahasrara), relating to spiritual connection, understanding and enlightenment.

In crystal healing, Sardonyx is said to help with illnesses and symptoms relating to anxiety, bladder problems, bones, bowels, chronic back pain, fluid balance, HIV and AIDS, immune system, impotence, kidney, lungs, prostate, septicaemia, sterility, stress and urinary tract infections. It is also beneficial in stimulating the absorption of nutrients and eliminating wastes through the intestines and is said to work most effectively when laid upon the stomach.

Emotionally, Sardonyx is said to assist with confidence, depression, grief, hope, sadness, stability and willpower.

Sardonyx can be used for a number of the Zodiac signs but is listed as a modern birthstone for Aries (21st March - 19th April).

Onyx is listed as both an ancient and a modern birthstone for Leo (23rd July - the 22nd August). Sardonyx is not on the anniversary list but Onyx is listed on the anniversary list for the 7th and on the alternative list for the 10th anniversary.

Meditation

Sardonyx is a perfect crystal for meditating with to keep you grounded through the Earth Star and Base or Root Chakra and to strengthen your inner self. If you use Sardonyx that contains White Onyx it will assist you in making contact with the spiritual realms through your Third Eye Chakra.

Affirmation: I am focused and acting with integrity.

Important to Know

WARNING: Be careful how you store or carry Sardonyx as it is a brittle crystal and can be damaged relatively easily.

As with all crystals you use regularly, don’t forget to cleanse and recharge it at least once a month.

For crystal healers who use crystals in their work, they should be cleansed after each client to remove any negative energy prior to being used on someone else.

PLEASE REMEMBER: Although the powers of crystals and stones are well documented and have been proven to help bring positivity into people's lives, they are never a substitute for medical advice.
