Composition

Tiger Eye is a chatoyant gemstone. a member of the quartz group, that is usually a metamorphic rock with a golden to red-brown colour and a silky lustre. It gains its silky, lustrous appearance from the parallel intergrowth of quartz crystals and altered amphibole fibres that have mostly turned into Limonite. Tiger Eye is chiefly composed of silicon dioxide and is most of its colour stems from iron oxide inclusions. It is a silicon dioxide crystal and is typically a yellow-brown to a golden-brown colour. The colour changes lustre like a cat's eye when you move them because of the fibre inclusions within the crystal.

A cat’s eye is a light shimmering glaze that coats the stone but is incredibly hard to see unless it’s under the right light. This effect is caused by the mineral’s natural parallel structures and reflective light that hits these minute, needle-like fibers. Tiger Eye and all of its varieties (Hawk Eye or Blue Tiger Eye, Pietersite, Red Tiger Eye) are some of the very few minerals in existence capable of exhibiting this magical chatoyant effect.
