Sobriety & Spirituality

Amethyst, also called the “Stone of Sobriety” and the “Spiritual Stone”, has been in use since the Neolithic period around 2500 BC. The name Amethyst comes from the Greek word “óchi methysménos” meaning “not drunk”. Amethyst is a common crystal mainly sourced from Brazil for the European market but also found in Bolivia, Botswana, China, India, Madagascar, Mexico, Tanzania and Uruguay.

It is a Silicon dioxide of the silicates class of crystals and its colouring comes from iron and aluminium deposits. It is found in various shades of pale lavender to dark purple and is translucent to opaque in appearance. It is sometimes layered with white Quartz when it is known as Chevron Amethyst and when combined with Citrine is known as Ametrine.

Amethyst is considered a powerful crystal to use for spiritual connection, meditation and to assist with psychic abilities. It is also a psychic stone of protection against psychic attack, witchcraft and black magic and works by absorbing and returning negative energy back to the universe after being transmuted into positive loving energy. It is a good crystal to keep near computers, televisions, Wi-Fi routers and other electrical equipment to absorb EMF (Electromagnetic Field Radiation).

When used in the workplace, it can help create the space to feel calm by clearing any negative thoughts that are emitted and will help at an intuitive level for making tough decisions. Keep a piece at the side of the bed or under your pillow to help with insomnia, and in particular, for children who are afraid of the dark or who have recurring nightmares or night terrors.

Originally, Amethyst gems were as expensive as Diamonds but as the crystal began to be found in more places and in larger quantities, the price reduced considerably. It was prized by ancient civilisations and there are a number of references to it in the Bible. It is reputedly one of the stones that were set into the breastplate of the High Priest Aaron.

Purple is the highest spiritual colour and traditionally purple altar cloths are used during Advent and Lent. The dark purple of the Amethyst is used to symbolise Christ and is the gem used in the Bishops’ rings, whilst members of the Catholic clergy wore Amethyst in their crosses to represent piety and celibacy. Ancient Greeks and Romans used Amethyst in several ways from items of jewellery to amulets against inebriation and for protection whilst travelling. Saint Valentine, the patron saint of romantic love, wore an amethyst ring carved with the image of Cupid.

Amethyst is associated with the Goddesses Artemis the Greek Goddess of the Hunt and Childbirth; and her Roman counterpart Diana the Roman Goddess of the Moon and Protector of Animals.

Important to Know

As with all crystals you use regularly, don’t forget to cleanse and recharge it at least once a month.

For crystal healers who use crystals in their work, they should be cleansed after each client to remove any negative energy prior to being used on someone else.

PLEASE REMEMBER: Although the powers of crystals and stones are well documented and have been proven to help bring positivity into people's lives, they are never a substitute for medical advice.
