Card Meaning

Card Number 19 of the Tarot’s Major Arcana is The Sun. The Sun is a vibrant symbol of the life force within you and in all of creation. It shines the brightest light on earth and is, therefore, a symbol for clarity, as well as power. Sunshine feels good. When the sun shines, you’re in a better mood, feeling happier and more positive and energetic.

You are more connected to your own power, life force and your own source. You feel vibrant, alive and like you can do anything. And you can. The Sun symbolises the Source that constantly supports your life in all you do. It is the life-force that is innate in all living things.

When you come across the Sun in a spread, it sheds light on things that have previously eluded you. Remember Johnny Nash’s song I can see clearly now, the rain has gone? That’s the kind of clarity you get when the Sun shows up for you in Tarot.

With clarity and insight, your sense of purpose becomes clearer, too, and most of all, your confidence rises, so this card can also relate to the Solar Plexus, sol meaning sun. The name says it all. This is the seat of your power, your certainty and self-confidence. It is the driving force of inspired action.

The Sun is your radiance, the shine you carry out into the world and inspire others with as well. When you allow yourself to shine, you will find that others will start to do the same because your example gives them permission to do the same. Shining your light is not the same as arrogance and keeping your light hidden is not the same as humility. Please, don’t confuse these concepts. They are all very different.

Arrogance is a perception that you are somehow better than others or others don’t matter as much as you. Shining your light is expressing yourself with authenticity, in a way that reflects who you really are in your core essence.

Hiding your light is born from fear and shame. It is the fear of making mistakes, failing, not being accepted and somehow ridiculing yourself. Humility is different. It is unassuming, it accepts and offers without forcing yourself in any way on to another.

It is the live-and-let-live philosophy, the acceptance of others being different, yet always equal, even if you don’t share the same opinions or values. It is the understanding that we are all expressions of the Divine and there is no difference between us at a core energetic level. We are all made from the same energy that breathes life force into all living things.

The Sun asks you to gain a higher perspective, be bold and courageous and take action in alignment with your soul expression. It asks you to lead by example and not to be afraid to shine your light in the most authentic way you know how.

Don’t hide any part of yourself and bring your shadows to the light to be changed from perceived weaknesses into your new superpowers. When you accept all of yourself and express who you are boldly and unapologetically, you are a beacon of light for others to do the same, too.
