18 The Moon

Card #18, or XVIII, of the Major Arcana is The Moon. It deals with fears, illusion, traumas, suppression and addictions, but also the hidden mysteries, dreams and magic. When you look up into the night sky, the moon is the brightest source of light there. It is soft, eerie and beautiful, it holds magic and shines a different light than the Sun by day. The moon initiates you into the mysteries of your own psyche. It beckons you to separate fact from fiction and delve deeply into your own inner world in order to explore, learn and grow.
When the Moon shows in your spread, it can either tell you that you are keeping up illusions in order to not see things as they really are. Are you deceiving yourself because the truth is too uncomfortable or is someone else taking advantage of and deceiving you?
The Moon also invites you to pay attention to your dreams, especially the recurring ones. Sleep is a form of meditation where the unconscious mind is no longer censored by the waking, analytical mind. The symbolism in dreams is, therefore, a rich one that can give you much insight into the messages your inner self is sending you.
Nightmares, the Subconscious & Fears
If you use a special dream dictionary, whether it’s a book or an online website, it will be useful to make an agreement with yourself to use the symbols in your dream in the way they are explained in the dream dictionary you are using, so you can be sure that you can relate to the explanations. Keep a special dream journal by your bed and write down all your dreams as soon as you wake up, so you don’t forget. You will notice that over time, you remember more and more clearly and in more detail what your dreams were.
The Moon can also relate to the use of drugs or other addictive substances, like alcohol, food (in an unhealthy way) and other things. Addictions are always caused by an emotional feeling of lack and emptiness, whether it is that you think you are not good enough or not loveable enough, etc. If you’re suffering from an addiction, go deep inside yourself and find the root cause of the addiction, or else, even if you give it up, you will substitute it for something else instead, rather than really healing it.
The Moon can also show the hidden magic in your or other things. It invites you to have courage, be bold and to explore your own inner magic, your true hidden powers and bring them to the light to be used to become an ever more powerful creator in your own right.
If you are facing a personal mystery at this time, go within, retreat from the world for a while and find the hidden answers within. The Moon gives you the space to do so. But make sure, you don’t fall into victim-mode or for someone’s sob story. Don’t make others’ problems your own, for this will end in you feeling drained and unappreciated and others feeling disempowered. Set healthy boundaries in all your relationships.
